Kokernag, Oct 02 (KNO): Authorities have imposed a complete ban on the entry, sale and storage of single-use plastic items within and around the premises of the Botanical Garden Kokernag.
According to an order issued by SDM Kokernag, the step was taken after repeated complaints of plastic pollution in the garden that not only threatened the environment but also contaminated the Kokernag spring, an important source of drinking water and supply to the Trout Fish Farm.
The order, a copy of which lies with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), stated that despite regular cleanliness drives, plastic dumping continued to choke the water supply, posing a risk to aquatic life and public health.
Officials said that disposable plates, cups, glasses, spoons and other plastic items were found littered in the garden despite existing government restrictions.
Citing provisions of the Plastic Waste Management Rules and J&K government orders banning non-biodegradable plastic items, the SDM said violation of this directive will invite strict action under law—(KNO)
